Microspec supplies specialist plastic spreaders, needles and sampling products used within the pharmaceutical, healthcare and laboratory sectors. Their products require careful handling throughout the packaging process to maintain quality, consistency and presentation.
The Challenge
Microspec required a packaging solution capable of handling a wide range of product sizes and formats on a single machine. Flexibility was essential, as production involved wrapping multiple types of plastic spreaders and needles without lengthy changeovers.
Product handling was equally important. The company wanted a system that would allow products to be placed gently onto the wrapping film, reducing the risk of damage while maintaining a consistent, professional package appearance.

The Solution
In 2014, FDA Packaging Machinery supplied Microspec with a FLEXWRAP machine.
The machine provided the flexibility to wrap numerous product sizes on a single platform, allowing Microspec to support a wide product range without investing in multiple packaging lines.
By placing products directly onto the film before wrapping, the top-seal design enabled delicate products to be handled with greater care throughout the packaging process.
The machine’s flexible design also allowed Microspec to develop the system further as production demands increased. In later years, the line was automated with the addition of a robotic loading system, which now places products directly onto the machine infeed, increasing efficiency while retaining the proven FDA wrapping platform.
The Results
Installed in 2014, the single FLEXWRAP machine continues to operate successfully, providing the flexibility needed to wrap multiple spreader and needle sizes on one platform. The machine’s top-seal design has proven essential for Microspec, ensuring delicate laboratory products are handled gently throughout the packaging process while maintaining a consistent, professional finish.
As production demands increased, the machine demonstrated its underlying adaptability by seamlessly integrating with a new robotic loading system. Despite more than 12 years of continuous operation and increased throughput, the FLEXWRAP has required zero FDA service visits. Maintained entirely by the customer, the system continues to deliver outstanding long-term reliability.
