Sponge is a Norfolk-based cake manufacturer and online cake retailer, supplying a wide range of cakes across the UK.
The Challenge
Sponge needed a packaging solution capable of handling multiple cake products while maintaining hygiene standards and reducing cleaning time between production runs.

The Solution
FDA Packaging supplied its first flow wrapping machine in 2013. The machine was chosen for its flexibility across different products and its ability to place products directly onto the film, helping reduce crumb build-up, minimise cross contamination and keep cleaning requirements low. As demand grew, Sponge returned to FDA for additional machines in 2021 and again in 2026.
The Results
More than a decade after the first installation, Sponge continues to rely on FDA packaging equipment across its production operation. Despite years of use and multiple machines in service, only four service visits have been required, demonstrating the reliability and low maintenance nature of the equipment.
